What to Expect as a New Client at ERA

Coming to therapy can feel intimidating. We’re here to help that feel a little bit easier.

Here’s what to expect when you start as a new client with us:

New Client Consultation

Every new client at ERA starts with a consultation phone call. Sometimes two calls will happen, depending how you found us and how much information we have. You may speak with our Clinic Director, Emily, or Clinic Lead, Jeni, first so we can make sure to match you with the right clinician. If you already know who you’d like to see, you may be directed right to the therapist you’ll meet with. If you have scheduled your consultation phone call online, you will be send a short form to complete before the phone call. If you have

In your consultation call, you’ll talk a bit about why you’re coming to therapy and what you’re hoping to work on, the style of the therapist, policies, fees, and scheduling. You’ll have a chance to ask any questions that you have and generally make sure you’re a great fit to work together.

This call is for both of you - for your therapist to ensure you are a good fit for their expertise, as well as for you to feel like they’re a good fit for you. We believe that the fit between client and clinician is the most important tool that we have. If you don’t feel like it’s the right fit, let us know. You can chat with someone else if there is availability and expertise that matches or we can help you find other options.

At the end of the consultation call, if you both agree it’s a good fit, you’ll schedule your initial appointment. That’s the first full session. Between the consultation and your initial appointment, your therapist will send you our intake paperwork to fill out and sign, which can be completed online. All of our therapists see clients both at our Whitefish Bay office and online via telehealth.

Our Offices

Please see directions to our space here. There are also pictures of the exterior of our building so you know where to go.

If you are coming in person, please enter the waiting room and make yourself comfortable. There are QR codes to scan to check in so your therapist knows you have arrived. We have water, coffee, tea, and snacks available, please help yourself to whatever you would like. Seriously, eat the snacks.

Initial Appointment

Your initial appointment is for you and your clinician to begin getting to know one another and setting your goals to work together. You will go through some of your intake paperwork and your therapist will go through some specific policies like our informed consent to ensure you understand them fully.

You get to set the pace for your work with your therapist. You are allowed to say ‘no’ to talking about anything that you aren’t ready to go into detail on. You are allowed to slow down, or change topics, or pause on anything. Please continue to ask any questions you have.

At the end of your appointment, you and your therapist will schedule subsequent appointments if you have not already. Your therapist will also run your payment method at the end of your session. Please let them know if you would like a superbill to submit to your insurance company.
