Fertility challenges are A LOT.

Starting or expanding your family wasn’t meant to be this difficult. Why can everyone else create a baby “the old fashioned way” and I have to work so hard at it? It’s unfair. It’s a lot to handle because infertility doesn’t just affect the reproductive organs, it affects everything.

It’s overwhelming.

It’s a lot to manage - appointments, finances, schedules, hormones, emotions.

It can feel one-sided if there is “nothing wrong” with your partner.

Or lonely if your story doesn’t look like the ‘typical’ journey.

You feel defective. Broken. Not good enough. A burden.

You worry. Will this ever work?!

You wonder how much longer you can keep going. While longing and yearning for a child.

We see you.

Through Fertility Counseling, we can help you sort out your emotions, thoughts, and feelings. We can give you the space to unload all of this, then do something with it. We can give you the space your mental health needs. You deserve it. You deserve the opportunity to mentally process what is going on physically with a supportive professional person.

Clinicians at ERA Wellness are those people. We welcome anyone in their infertility journey - birthing persons, intended parents, partners, surrogate carriers, and couples. There is zero judgment here, everyone is welcome. ERA is based in Whitefish Bay in Milwaukee but able to work with people across the state of Wisconsin online. We can work together to help you cope with how hard things are right now, and learn to manage your thoughts and emotions to help you handle things more effectively in the future.

Wherever you are in your infertility journey or fertility challenges, you can feel different mentally and emotionally. You deserve to feel better mentally. You deserve to feel in control of your emotions and mental health when your fertility health feels so out of control.

Schedule a complimentary fertility counseling consult with ERA and decide if we’re the right therapists to help you. When you schedule, you’ll be able to pick a date and time that works for you and your life.

FAQs About Fertility Counseling:

  • Fertility counseling is therapy with someone who is currently undergoing or considering fertility treatments, or is making a decision or coping with a decision regarding building their family. Some people come to us at the start of their fertility process, knowing that going through IUI or IVF are going to be tricky, and some come to us when they’re coping with the information that they will not be able to have the family they had hoped and planned for. There isn’t a wrong time to start.

  • At ERA, we believe that people in the fertility process need a specialist for therapy. You’ve probably spent what feels like eons explaining fertility treatments and choices to other people in your life, and we don’t think you should have to do that with your therapist too.

  • This really depends a lot on where you are in your fertility process, what the situation is, and what your goals are in therapy. Some people come to cope with a specific procedure or work out a certain point with their partner, and some continue to utilize the support of a therapist throughout - in fertility treatments, pregnancies or adoption, and into parenting. At ERA, you’re an active participant in the therapy process, from deciding on goals and frequency of sessions to deciding when you’re ready to discharge.

  • There is no right or wrong time to start mental health therapy for any concern, even infertility. Some warning signs to consider therapy when in your infertility journey include: persistent anxiety that doesn’t decrease, persistent depression that doesn’t get better, being so mentally preoccupied with fertility-related thoughts and emotions, hard to concentrate on anything other than infertility, social isolation, mood swings, loss of interest in usual activities, marital problems, difficulty with intimacy with partner, difficulty with memory - just to name some reasons we see people with fertility challenges.

  • Well, you have found this page, which means the idea has already been brewing. We see those with infertility concerns from the point of “I just found out I have ___” to “I have been battling infertility for years” to “I have secondary infertility.”

In short, it’s never too late, and it’s never too early.

  • We are happy to see both of you individually- we have multiple clinicians in our office that work with those with infertility. There is also the option for couples counseling in our office. Our couples counseling clinician is dual-trained in perinatal mental health and couples counseling, meaning they can bring the two together clinically.

  • We are so sorry that is your story. Your loss(es) matters. Those losses and the grief that comes with them may include actual pregnancy, embryo, or child losses, but also the loss of the family story or journey that you thought you and your partner would have.

  • Yes, we can. Oftentimes this looks like processing the loss of not being able to use your eggs, sperm, or body. Our clinicians can help process that loss. Our clinicians are able to help you process your decisions about next steps, emotions within those steps, and most things in-between.

  • First off - your story matters, and it is safe to tell your story here.

We have therapists that are supportive and validating of people who have had to terminate a pregnancy, no matter the story or reason behind it.

Emily also has experience and knowledge providing support to people currently making a decision to terminate (either for medical reasons, called TFMR, or otherwise) or awaiting a procedure. If you are in immediate need of support in this area, please reach out to her directly at 414-301-3411 or emily@erawellnesstherapy.com. Please note that our voicemail and email systems are confidential, but you may want to be cautious about the information you leave on either. You may indicate this need for urgency and confidentiality by using the phrase “I am looking for resources for stress management”.

If we need to return your call or email, we will not identify the reason that we are contacting you, just “Emily from ERA Wellness returning your call”.
